The Surprising Power of Saying Less
Step Away to Step Into Leadership That Lasts

Story
When Leadership Became Quiet

A few years ago, I thought leadership was about having the right words.
I rehearsed the lines, studied the frameworks, and perfected the presentations. I was always “on”—polished, prepared, persuasive. And it worked… sort of. People listened. But they didn’t really follow. Not in the way that builds something lasting.
Then, slowly, everything began to shift.
It started with the inner work. I rewrote the old story that said I had to perform to be valued. I stopped outsourcing my worth to the applause of others. I began owning my internal state instead of being a hostage to my circumstances.
From there, I started building a different kind of life. One with relationships that nourished me, not just networks that looked good on paper. I created rhythms that didn’t just optimize productivity, but cultivated peace.
And somewhere along the way—without even realizing it—my leadership changed.
It got quiet.
Not weak. Not passive. But still. Grounded. Centered.
People began responding differently. I wasn’t trying to control the room anymore. But I noticed others calmed down when I walked in. I didn’t have to fill the silence or over-explain. My presence started doing the talking.
That’s when I understood the real difference.
Performative leadership is loud. Embodied leadership is steady.
The former is about managing how you're seen. The latter is about becoming someone worth following—whether anyone’s watching or not.
Influence isn’t about saying more. It’s about becoming someone people trust. And that kind of trust? It’s forged in the unseen places: in the pause before reacting, in the way you stay when things get hard, in the alignment between who you are and how you lead.
You don’t have to impress your way into impact.
You can embody your way there.
Deep Dive
The Day I Stopped Trying to Lead The Room
I used to walk into every room with a plan. Not just an agenda—but a carefully managed version of myself. I’d check my tone. My posture. My phrasing. I wanted to lead well, but really, I wanted to be seen a certain way.
Then came a day I’ll never forget.
It was a high-stakes meeting. I had prepped every line, rehearsed every pivot. But five minutes in, I felt it unraveling. Not because I forgot what to say—but because I realized I wasn’t present. I was performing. I was more focused on how I was being perceived than on what actually needed to happen in that room.
So I did something radical.
I stopped talking. I took a breath. I let go of the outcome. And instead of trying to lead the room, I chose to be in it.
That’s when everything changed.
I noticed the energy shift. People leaned in—not because I had a brilliant point, but because I had dropped the performance. I wasn’t transmitting pressure anymore. I was transmitting presence. And presence is magnetic.
That moment taught me a truth I carry with me still:
The most powerful leadership isn’t reactive. It’s resonant.
It doesn’t manage optics. It embodies alignment.
And it begins with daily practices that rewire how you show up—not just in big moments, but in all the small ones leading up to them.
Putting Into Practice
3 Ways to Transmit Steadiness
1. Audit the Energy You Bring Into a Room
Before a meeting or interaction, pause and ask:
What am I carrying emotionally right now?
What would it look like to lead from clarity instead of control?
This five-second reset allows you to choose your presence—not let it choose you.
2. Center in the Moment, Not in the Outcome
Let go of the need to land every line. Trust that your presence will speak louder than your script. When you say less with more awareness, your impact deepens. Let your pauses be powerful.
3. Reinforce Internal Alignment Daily
Even a 60-second check-in—like a morning intention or a quiet evening review—can re-center you. It reminds you: your most important leadership work isn’t out there. It’s in here. When that’s solid, the rest flows.
